What Is A Stamping Mold / Die ?

Mar 13, 2023

A stamping mold, also known as a stamping die or simply a die / stamping tool, is a specialized tool used in the manufacturing process to shape, cut, or form metal sheets or other materials into specific shapes. The process of using a stamping mold is called stamping, which involves applying pressure to a material, causing it to deform or change shape according to the specifications of the mold.

The stamping mold typically consists of two parts, the male and female dies. The male die is the upper part, which is attached to the press, while the female die is the lower part that is mounted on the press bed. When the two parts are brought together, the metal sheet or material is placed between them, and the press is activated to apply pressure, causing the material to be formed into the desired shape.

There are several types of stamping dies used in metalworking and sheet metal forming. The following are some of the most common types of stamping dies:

1. Blank and Pierce Dies: used to cut out and pierce a blank from a sheet metal strip.

2. Progressive Dies: used to perform multiple operations on a single sheet metal strip in a sequential manner, such as cutting, bending, punching, and forming.

3. Combination Dies: used to perform multiple operations on a single sheet metal part, such as cutting and forming.

4. Forming Dies: used to bend or shape a sheet metal part into a desired form or shape.

5. Drawing Dies: used to draw a sheet metal blank into a desired shape, such as a cup or shell.

6. Cam-Operated Dies: used to perform a single operation, such as cutting or forming, with the aid of a cam and a press.

7. Compound Dies: used to cut and form a sheet metal part in a single operation, with the aid of multiple cutting and forming stations.

8. Transfer Dies: used to transfer a sheet metal part from one operation station to the next, with the aid of a transfer mechanism.

These are some of the common types of stamping dies used in sheet metal forming, but there may be other variations and types depending on the specific application and requirements.

Stamping molds can be designed for a wide range of applications, including the production of automotive parts, electronic components, medical devices, household appliances, and many other products. The molds can be made from various materials, including steel, aluminum, and other alloys, depending on the specific requirements of the manufacturing process.
