How Metal Pressing Nozzles Are Made by Deep Drawing--Taking Perfume Bottle Nozzles as an Example

Jun 13, 2023

Metal spouts are essential components of perfume bottles, responsible for precise and controlled dispensing of fragrances. One common manufacturing technique used to produce these spouts is deep drawing. This case study delves into the process of manufacturing metal spouts for perfume bottles through deep drawing, highlighting the key steps involved and the benefits of this technique.

Step 1: Material Selection and Preparation:

The first step in the manufacturing process of metal spouts through deep drawing is selecting the appropriate material. Commonly used materials include stainless steel, brass, and aluminum, chosen for their durability, corrosion resistance, and compatibility with perfume formulations. The selected material is obtained in the form of sheets or coils, which are then cut into discs of appropriate size for the deep drawing process.

Step 2: Deep Drawing Process:

  • a. Lubrication: The metal discs are coated with lubricants to reduce friction during the deep drawing process. This ensures smoother material flow and prevents the formation of wrinkles or cracks.
  • b. Die Preparation: Deep drawing involves using a die set, consisting of a punch, die, and blank holder. The die is prepared by machining or casting to the desired shape of the metal spout. The punch, attached to a hydraulic or mechanical press, exerts force on the metal disc to shape it into the desired form.
  • c. Blanking: A metal disc is placed on the blank holder, which holds the material firmly in place. The punch descends, forcing the metal disc to deform and flow into the die cavity.
  • d. Drawing: As the punch continues to exert pressure, the metal disc is pulled into the die cavity, elongating and taking on the shape of the spout. The material thins out radially while retaining its thickness in the axial direction.
  • e. Redrawing (Optional): For complex shapes or spouts with multiple stages, a redrawing process may be employed. This involves using a secondary die set to further refine the shape and dimensions of the spout.

Step 3: Trimming and Finishing:

After the deep drawing process, excess material or flash is trimmed off using cutting tools or automated trimming machines. Trimming ensures that the metal spout has clean edges and the desired final dimensions. The spouts are then subjected to various finishing processes, such as polishing, buffing, or plating, to enhance their appearance and provide corrosion resistance.

Step 4: Quality Control:

Throughout the manufacturing process, quality control measures are implemented to ensure the metal spouts meet the required standards. Inspections are carried out to verify dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and functionality. Non-destructive testing methods, such as visual inspection and measurements, are employed to identify any defects or inconsistencies.

The deep drawing process offers a reliable and efficient method for manufacturing metal spouts for perfume bottles. By selecting the appropriate material and employing the precise techniques of lubrication, die preparation, blanking, drawing, and optional redrawing, we can produce high-quality spouts with the desired shape, dimensions, and functionality. With proper trimming and finishing, metal spouts contribute to the aesthetic appeal and functional performance of perfume bottles. The application of quality control measures throughout the manufacturing process ensures that the final products meet the stringent standards expected in the perfume industry.
